Orlando, my beloved friend

My first contact with Orlando was crazy! I flung my arms round his neck and I kissed him. I didn't even know his name when the Guildhall called us to tell us the result of the entrance examination.
After days of rehearsals, improvisations, singing, dancing, we were 100 people left of 1000 that had started.

On that Sunday they called us, we were divided into 3 groups (those who were in, those out, and those who were stand-by, waiting to be someone's substitute). While everyone was in panic, I noticed a guy next to me, and I told myself : "how cute!!", and that was Orlando. He started playing the fool saying: "Hey guys, maybe there's a hidden camera, we're still under examination!".

Then the teachers entered the room saying that we were in, and I kissed Orlando on his face.
At that time I didn't know I was sharing that moment of joy with someone that was about to become one of my best friends.

We used to call each other 'me Maya, me Orlando' (i.e. 'my' in cockney). He's very sweet with friends. The first time I went to his house he screamed: "Gibbo, Giiiibbo!", and I heard from the other room "Gibbo!"; it was his friend Chris, who Orlando was living with at that time.

We actually became friends some time later. Orlando is from London, so he had his friends there, and that's why he didn't spend much time with the group.
During the second year we all started going out together. Some words in a pub, and we became good friends. We were always together. That year I lived in Stamford Hill in a house with people who were very rude, and I was very far from school, so sometimes I went sleeping to Orlando's in Soho.

He didn't drink or smoke, neither did I, we both liked relaxing in the swimming pool after the lessons, or walking in parks.
Orlando seems absent-minded, but on the contrary he's a great listener. He' a special person. He's very generous, loyal, he has a great capability of loving.

I understood he is a great person when I met his friends. If you want to know someone you have to know his friends. Our school companions didn't see these characteristics. His only friends at the academy were Matthew Brown (who quit after one year), and me.

When I got back to Italy to shoot Marco Bellocchio's "The Nurse", I'd been away for 3 months, and I think Orlando suffered a lot about that. Especially for the accident. It's been a nightmare. At that time, I was very happy because I was the only girl who was asked to study a scene from Hamlet. On a Sunday, Orlando asked me to go out, but I had to study, so I refused. He decided to go to some friends' house for lunch.

Some how, they got stuck out of the house, and, to get into it from a window, Orlando climbed a rain-pipe and fell in an abandoned garden. The next morning teachers were particularly kind to me, a couple of friends came to me like to support me. I noticed Orlando wasn't there. A teacher told me "Yes Maya, It's about Orlando. It's life".

I thought I was about to die. Orlando couldn't have walked again. I immediately ran to the hospital, even if one of my teachers tried to convince me not to. He said to me that the evening his best friend had died, he was on stage. I answered, crying, that I wasn't like him, that that day I didn't care about my job.

Orlando has changed a lot after this experience. Something like this makes you understand your limits. When I saw him in that hospital bed, he looked terrorized. He was under morphine, and couldn't move.
After 10 days I got back to the hospital, and I saw Chris sitting on Orlando's bed, reading comics. "Where's Orlando?" "In the toilet", he answered, smiling. After a while Orlando came in, walking.

That day I realized that he couldn't be stopped.
Orlando had had job offers even before starting at Guildhall. He was the only one having an agent.

During those 3 years at the academy, he always refused any role that he was offered. On the third year, all the school companions were desperately looking for an agent, and Orlando got 7 letters after a show in which he only had 7 lines.

Everyone was envious, but he had something more, and people noticed it. After I starred in "The Nurse", Orlando too was offered a part in Italy. But he never did it.

The last day of school he was told he was a cast member of The Lord of the Rings. 3 movies in a year and a half in New Zealand. I went to see him; I spent a month there. We traveled a lot. He also made me do some extreme sports that he loves.

We bungee jumped once. I was scared, but I jumped, and I must admit it's been one of the greatest experience of my life. He jumped backwards with a camera. I think it's on the movie's dvd.

Orlando's not only brave, but he's also a creative person, he likes sculpting and taking photographs. On the LotR's set he kept a kind of diary made of polaroids and thoughts. He's a poetic person, he's a dreamer, and he likes people and art.

When we watched Romeo+Juliet, he stated "We should have made it!", and we really could, for the love we share for Shakespeare, and for friendship. We would like to work together, it would be a good excuse to spend some time together, like in the past. At the moment we are working on different movies, even if we have the same tastes. Maybe we'll manage to do it in the future. For now, we live our friendship on the phone. But he always complains that I rarely call, and it's true, but just because it's difficult to find him! He called me from the Caribbean, from Morocco.

Success hasn't changed him, he always has the same friends. When I see his pictures on magazines, I see his t-shirts, his pendants, and I can see the guy I met in London a few years ago, when we both hoped to become actors.

from Pavement Magazine

Elijah Wood, said "Viggo is our king. He's one of my favourite poeple in life. He's brilliantly talented in so many ways. An incredible photographer, painter, actor..And he's incredibly eccentric. He's just such a loyal, kind, sweethearted man who's hilarious to be around and inspiring in all the things he achieves and sets out to do. I've certainly learned alot from him. His perspective on life is beautiful too. He's a real lover of nature and a very giving and accepting man. And theres something about Viggo that's absolutely, completely insane and I find that endearing. He really is mad."

Jed Brophy (Kiwi actor) said "At the end of shooting one day, we went out and had a drink and Viggo was just so encouraging of everybody he'd worked with, including the extra's. He always had a kind word to say to everyone. And I don't know anyone who has a bad word to say about him. He bought flowers for all the extras on one incredibly rainy day. He was just really generous with his time but he never talked himself up. He is quiet shy about talking about his own achievements. They were really lucky they got him for this. He kind of makes the film."

Jeez, I'm confused!

Others aren't. "Oh, come on," pleaded one of those set interlopers who's paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to mind the out-of-town goings-on (and not speak to the likes of me) on movie sets, Elizabethtown included. "I've seen them together. Something's going on."

When pressed, the pooper 'fessed he hasn't seen anything more than huddled conversations and meals together. Hell, even Louisville's locals have been reporting that--via these very electronic pages--for weeks now.

(And now that E's filming here in H-town, Kirsten and Orlando are right back at it, hanging tight locally. Love it!)

Quite frankly, since one of the supposed doers involved is one of those notoriously untouchable Lord of the Rings types, we may never know fer sure.

I mean, I hear the fussy Brit even talks on the phone through a handkerchief. For germ-avoidance purposes, natch. Sheesh, a lover like that ain't leavin' much of a trail, trust me.

Still in the mood for indelicate dissolution? Thought so.

[..] Viggo Mortensen, vibin' to John Doe lyrics at Largo. Fairfax Avenue. City of the Fallen Egos. Planted solo, deep in the banquette room, V.M. (sporting a red soccer shirt and a five o'clock shadow) politely gabbed with blond admirers and sipped on-the-house bevs--still remembering to tip. Vig-doll's interest in Mr. Doe is rooted in history: John once punked out in the band X with Mr. M.'s ex-wife, Exene Cervenka. Ms. C. is reportedly suing V.M. for amped-up child support for their 16-year-old son, Henry.

[..]

Other tongue-biz buzz was 'bout, oh, not much, just partying and homosexuality, the usual Hollywood canapé chitchat.

"There was a lot of screwing going on in New Zealand," pooped an inside (high-up) set vet. "But look, most of it was straight. These guys [Hobbits, elves, horny young men] just aren't afraid to show their incredible affection for one other; that's what gets the gay stuff started."

Glad that's settled! (Yeah, right.)

"Dominic, hands down," I was told by myriad Rings-leaders when I quizzed them about who got into the most trouble off camera. Hmmm. Very interesting, as just seconds before Dom-cutie-tamooti--in shimmer 'n' scruff--told me he felt Viggo was awfully artful at target practice.

"He was always off hunting and fishing, you know," D.M. weighed in with a wink. Elijah concurred, but more about that one latuh. Time to switch-hit back to the hot 'n' bothered blood-red carpet, doncha think?

While filming the Oscar-nominated film The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Viggo Mortensen was so captivated by New Zealand's natural beauty that he wanted to make sure the crew appreciated it, and not from a helicopter window. "He wanted to drive five, six, eight hours – sometimes two days – to get (to certain locations)," says producer Barrie Osborne. On one occasion, Mortensen (who is also an accomplished painter and photographer), costar Orlando Bloom and Osborne thought the sunrise on the South Island was so incredible that Mortensen persuaded the crew to camp out so it could be captured on film the next morning. "We got some steaks and barbecued, had big campfires and a lot of red wine, and told stories all night long," says Osborne.

quote:

"The last time I saw Viggo, we were supposed to go to some supercool club, but there was no way I was going to get Viggo to do that, and I couldn't really be bothered myself. So we went to some dingy little pub, and then we just bought a six-pack and sat in the park and chatted."

[...] B.L. Who impressed you most in the cast and why?

D.M. I think it was like that with a lot of actors. That was one of the
great things about the third movie. Because we were all separated,
instead of the Fellowship where you see everyone’s work, in the third
film you think "Wow, Elijah, that was great work, and Orlando and Bill
and Viggo." You’re impressed with everyone’s work, because at that time
everyone is working so hard.

B.L. How about Viggo. Why was he the perfect actor to play Aragorn?

D.M. I don’t think he’s the perfect actor for the role.

B.B. I think you are (to Dominic).

D.M. I think Viggo has a lot of qualities of Aragorn. He completely
commits to what he’s doing, which is what Aragorn eventually does too.
He was a great leader for the actors, especially for some of the young
guys.
I know that Orlando had a really great time with Viggo. He just
really commits 100%. He has a lot of fun and there’s always something
going on around Viggo.

B.B. Like flies?

D.M. Yes, he doesn’t shower. But at the end of every day there was
always some kind of party going on in one of our trailers where we have
drinks, hang out, chat. And he was a great guy for bringing together
the camaraderie and reminding us it was a group effort. He kind of led
by example, which is what Aragorn does.

Dear Ted:
Please, oh, please tell me how many lattes or Red Bulls I have to ply you with in order to bribe the following information: "Wait till you hear what I've got to say about Orlando [Bloom]'s bathroom habits." Don't make me come and paddle your chicken-fried ass. Showering you with hugs and smoochies--you know I love you more than my luggage.
Helen Troyerson
Green Bay, Wisconsin

Dear Helen:
Your what? Better be Louis Vuitton. Hmmm. Let's see here. What with all the ferocious ass kissing, I'd have to at least give you a Bloomin' hint, right? Think beyond clean.

Dear Ted:
In your recent Orlando Bloom item, you wrote, "Hell hath no fury like a fan base shaved." Would that be a shaved mustache or beard? Just wondering.
Tori Flower
Dallas

Dear Tori:
I am too, doll-puss, now that you asked. What are you implying?

Dear Ted:
I had to laugh when reading the retraction statement regarding Orlando Bloom: "Southern sources are electronically screaming at my chicken-fried ass that Mr. Bloom was 'very, very sweet' with the locals and not at all germ phobic."

Have you Googled Orlando lately? (Who doesn't want to Google Orlando?) There are hundreds of Internet sites and forums devoted to the man. Scores of women--yes, women, not just teenyboppers--all over the globe will come rushing to his defense should you besmirch his lovely name.

Dear Googling Gal:
Wait till you hear what I've got to say about Orlando's bathroom habits. Hell hath no fury like a fan base shaved.

Oh, you thought we were done with the puerile penis set, didja? Hardly.

No, we still need to zero in on Grimy Gus and Harland Fuss (or as they're known to their most secretive of buds, Gussy 'n' Fussy). G. 'n' F. have been on location recently. Well, one of them has, at least. Don't think too many folks know that Fuss has joined his good bud Gus for a little mattress messin'.

But I do! (And now you vicarious folks do, too--how fab!)

Look, I'm the first to give a hearty shout-out to two guys who want to do what they want, sexually speaking. But when both--all right, make that one--of these men go to great lengths to make the public believe he's bedding down with rising supersweet starlet Eartha Bertha, well then, I get a little pissy.

Although it sure was romantic when Gus 'n' Fuss went to such a Secret Service-defying to-do while Gus was out of the States (in a film-friendly environment) making his latest butch-it-up celluloid job.

Public lobby and elevator trips at the sumptuous Springtime Suites hotel with Fuss 'n' Eartha were arranged. Photographers just happened to be around, sorta the same way Rock Hudson lived his whole fake life. But I'm getting terribly off the point here, aren't I?

Back to the boys: It really is a modern-day Romeo + Romeo + Juliet story, if ya think about it.

Only the gullible public's the one taking the poison.-

You were expecting Gussy 'n' Fussy, perhaps? Like, who cares about those ersatz het jokers anymore? (Not too many folks, I assure ya.)

"Dear Ted:
Loving your new column, even the yellow. This is a question about an old blind item that I don't expect you'll answer but I thought I'd give it a shot. Are Harland Fuss and Grimy Gus still together?
—Silver

Dear Oldie:
No. Nor were they ever."
